“As the proud owner of a golden retriever myself, I know how special these sensitive and amazingly intelligent dogs can be,” says the author. “I wanted to do something about those poor goldens in need who have been abandoned or are in some way ‘unadoptable’ by ordinary standards. At Almost Heaven no golden retriever is turned away, no matter its age or condition. I think what this organization is doing is admirable, and I want to be a part of it. The money donated will be used for food, medications, bedding, toys, etc.. One little kind act at a time, that’s all it takes to make a difference.”

The author first came acquainted with Almost Heaven after reading Dean Koontz’s novel, The Darkest Evening of the Year and subsequently doing a search online for dog rescue organizations. “Koontz’s novel, whose protagonist runs one of these rescues, touched me at a deep emotional level,” says Calvani. “When I stumbled across Almost Heaven, I felt an immediate, almost preternatural connection. Not to mention the interesting coincidence that my book is published under Guardian Angel’s ‘Littlest Angels’ imprint, and Almost Heaven’s logo sports a golden retriever with an angel’s halo. That’s too many angels!”
